As we come towards the end of another year, I can't help but think about the traditional 'New Year's Resolutions'. Now in my mind, it seems these are never fulfilled. Maybe rarely. Why? Well, it could be anything from a weak foundation, unrealistic goals, lack of TRUE desire, or any number of things.
I myself have a few New Year's Resolutions. I hope to attain them. One of which is consistently making more time for prayer, fasting, and reading the Bible. You may not think that's a big deal. However, I assure you that's the most important,... for all of us.
Now, afterSHOCK, I pose a challenge to you. Make some New Year's Resolutions for yourselves. I hope #1 on your list will be making more time for prayer, fasting, and reading your Bible. The others don't have to be 'Try to be super spiritual'. Maybe just smile more, be a better friend, always give your best, nothing outrageous just real, simple, and attainable.
I love you guys and am praying for you always. Hope to see you at our New Year's lock-in, but most importantly I hope to see you all give more of yourself to Jesus Christ in this coming year! Much love!

Music (I'm sure it's part one or part of a mini series)
Hey afterSHOCK,
So, Jen and I were going through some music that was requested for a party. I hate to say that I was shocked when I read the lyrics and was aware of the content, but I was.
I know as a young person the beat and style of the music is what usually gets your attention. (hey, it works that way with all of us) Once you decide you like a particular band or artist, you usually start to follow them on facebook, buy their cds, go to their concerts, read their tweets, and do whatever else they are involved with. However, I have a million dollar question for you... Are you aware of the content, the language, and the topics the artists are pushing?! If you are, why are you still listening?
As a young person who is attempting to live a life that is holy and acceptable unto Christ, there are some things you MUST put to the side. As a Christian young person, you are searching for the very heartbeat of God and learning to take a stand against such things as pre-marital sex, drugs, drinking, inappropriate behavior, and the like. So how then can you take a stand against it, if you're singing along to it?
Jesus Christ himself said, "No man can serve two masters." He went on to say that you will either love one and hate the other; stay close to one and despise the other.
The music you allow to play through your ipods and cd players WILL find a place in your heart and mind to grow. As you follow the artist(s), you can and will be enticed by the lifestyle they portray and promote. What may start out as liking the beat of the music can turn into; living the lifestyle the music promotes.
If you're a young person on a journey towards Christ who desires to live for Him, worship Him, and serve Him; you need to take the time to go through that ipod artist database and through that cd case. Don't have the lyrics? Look 'em up... CHRISTIAN ARTISTS INCLUDED! Just because they have a 'Christian' label does not mean they ARE Christian in content and lifestyle.
Need some help on keeping the RIGHT musical influences? Here's a good scripture to help.
Philippians 4:8 "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."
I love you young people, and I'm always praying for you. Have questions? Need some helpful insight? Drop me a line. I'll do whatever I can to help ya.
To be continued....
Love,
DK

10 - 15 Minute Prayer
Hey afterSHOCK,
In class today we talked about prayer. The power of prayer, why we pray, how to pray,.. we even talked about the prayer sandwich. More specifically, I told you guys that if you would dedicate at least 10-15 minutes every day specifically to prayer you would see real growth in your spiritual lives.
Well, I want to challenge you today. Set a goal of prayer for at least 10-15 minutes every day. Don't just do it because I'm challenging you, but do it because you want to see God move in your life. Do it to so God can show Himself to you, reveal things to you, become close to you. I have just one request, leave a comment here on the blog to let us know how much of a blessing your life is receiving because of your dedication.
I promise you, if you will move towards God, He will move towards you!
Love you afterSHOCK, you're a great group to lead!

cleaning out the junk
Hey afterSHOCK youth,
Just wanted to take a minute to share a thought with you.
Ever have your parents tell you that you needed to clean your room? Of course, we all have. Now have you ever started cleaning up your room and realized that you had some junk that was taking up too much space and not being of benefit to you. You start realizing that in this "junk" are things you will never again use or look at, things that aren't memories (or aren't good memories), take up space, and in the end are just trash.
The same thing applies to our spiritual lives. We have to evaluate ourselves and see if there's any "junk". The spiritual junk is a little different. It can be a bad attitude, wrong motives, wrong desires, and so on. These things, just like the junk in your room, is of no benefit to you spiritually. They will do nothing, but distract you and detour you from the will of God for your life.
If we truly desire to be the best and obtain the best of what God has for us, we have to "take out the junk". God shouldn't get our second best or what is left over from the rest, so take out the junk and make way for the BEST!
Love you guys!

Don't Forget to Mark Your Calendars!
Hey afterSHOCK youth,
This is just a reminder that we have a youth bake sale this Sunday after the am service. Bring some goodies, you'll win your youth leader over if you bring no bake's or cheesecake. haha
ALSO, October 8th is the Section 4 youth rally at the Chesapeake church. We will talk more about that in youth classes and through announcements. The following Saturday, October 9th, is our youth outing. We will be going to the KYOVA mall to play black light mini golf.
So mark your calendars, add it to your cell phone, write it down,... do whatever you have to so you will remember these events.
Keep coming back to our blog as we will be updating it as often as we can with short stories, funny moments, events, etc.
Love you guys and we're praying for you!

Post Breakthrough 2010
Well, Breakthrough 2010 was awesome! God moved in and ministered to us in every service. A lot of great points were made by Bro.Meeks! If you didn't get to make it, you really missed out. We had one filled with the Holy Ghost, baptized in Jesus name, and one refilled with the Holy Ghost. Truly, revival is at GFAC, and we are excited and ready for God to continue to do a great work!
It was great to be able to meet the Meeks' and Ava Grace. They are a great couple with a very adorable little girl! We can't wait to have them back at GFAC!
Remember young people, you are more than conquerors!
God bless and have a great labor day!
